As an entrepreneur, your ability to set and achieve clearly defined goals daily, weekly and throughout the year can drastically improve your life at home and business. Research has proven that goal setting is most effective for the masses when you break them down into manageable tasks, we call S.M.A.R.T. goals (S=Specific M=Measurable A=Attainable R=Relevant and T=Timely.). We will talk about these in my next blog.
However, setting ONLY realistic or attainable goals would have never allowed for some of today’s GREATEST inventions. Those brilliant breakthroughs required extravagant dreamers to believe for the unattainable and pursue the impossible. The best leaders set RIDICULOUS goals.
Although the concept of setting specific, attainable and measurable goals is important, these are the left brain modalities that create process, structure, and progress. However, it is the right brain imaginative creativity that allows for revolutionaries to move boundaries and expand the possibilities of our time.
Brendon Burchard said it best when he stated, “Too many people have lost all grand ambitions for change and greatness by heeding the advice of the ‘realists’ and the standard bearers of the status quo, who tell us to set ‘smart’ goals.”
The reason for this is that smart goals often end up being small goals, which is good, but not if it forsakes giving room for the visionary to have big hairy audacious goals that can improve the future and create better processes, inventions and ideas. In a world that is flooded with analytics, task lists and spreadsheets, let’s not lose sight of the power of inspiration, motivation and a sense of wonder in what could be, should be and will be if we choose to dream beyond current boundaries set by our past, our current circumstances or even our society at large.
Take time to visualize your perfect life. If anything were possible…What would you do? Where would you live? What would you set your heart to accomplish in your lifetime?
